Materials You'll Need

  • 1/2 yard of fabric for the top
  • 1/2 yard of fabric for the bottom
  • 1/2 yard of batting
  • Thread
  • Sewing machine
  • Scissors
  • Iron and ironing board

Step-by-Step Instructions

Step 1: Cut the Fabric

  1. From the top fabric, cut two rectangles measuring 12" x 18".
  2. From the bottom fabric, cut two rectangles measuring 10" x 16".
  3. From the batting, cut two rectangles measuring 12" x 18".

Step 2: Sew the Top and Bottom Layers

  1. Place one of the top fabric rectangles right side up on a flat surface. Place one of the batting rectangles on top of the fabric, then place the other top fabric rectangle right side down on top of the batting.
  2. Pin the layers together around the edges, then sew around the perimeter with a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave a 4" opening on one side for turning.
  3. Trim the corners and turn the placemat right side out through the opening. Press the edges flat.
  4. Repeat steps 2 and 3 to sew the bottom layer of the placemat.

Step 3: Join the Layers

  1. Place the top and bottom layers of the placemat right sides together. Pin around the edges, then sew around the perimeter with a 1/4" seam allowance. Leave a 4" opening on one side for turning.
  2. Turn the placemat right side out through the opening. Press the edges flat.
  3. Topstitch around the edges of the placemat with a 1/8" seam allowance to secure the layers.

Finishing Touches

  1. Optional: Embellish the placemat with embroidery, quilting, or other decorative touches.
  2. Hand wash or machine wash the placemat on a gentle cycle in cold water. Tumble dry on low heat or air dry.
