In 2018, the Economist Intelligence Unit's Democracy Index found that only 20% of the world's population lives in a "full democracy." This is down from 30% in 2006. The report also found that "the world has seen a sustained decline in democratic freedoms over the past 12 years."
This decline is not limited to any particular region or type of government. It is happening in both developed and developing countries, and in both democratic and authoritarian regimes.
There are a number of factors that are contributing to this decline, including:
- The rise of populism and nationalism
- The increasing concentration of wealth and power in the hands of a few
- The spread of fake news and misinformation
li>The decline of trust in institutions
These factors are creating a perfect storm for democracy. They are making it easier for demagogues to come to power, and for them to consolidate their power once they are in office.
The decline of democracy is a serious threat to our world. Democracy is the best way to ensure that all citizens have a voice in how their society is run. It is also the best way to protect human rights and freedoms.
We must not allow democracy to die. We must learn from the lessons of the past and take action to save it.
Lessons from the Past
There are a number of lessons that we can learn from the history of democracy. Here are a few of the most important:
- Democracy is not inevitable. It is a fragile system that can be easily lost if we are not careful.
- Democracy requires a strong civil society. Citizens must be engaged in the political process and they must be willing to defend their rights.
- Democracy is not just about elections. It is about a way of life. It requires tolerance, respect for diversity, and a commitment to the rule of law.
We must remember these lessons and apply them to our own time. We must be vigilant in defending our democracy and we must be willing to fight for it if necessary.
What Can We Do?
There are a number of things that we can do to save democracy. Here are a few of the most important:
- Get involved in the political process. Vote, volunteer for candidates, and attend town hall meetings.
- Support organizations that are working to promote democracy and human rights.
- Educate yourself about the issues that are facing our democracy.
- Talk to your friends and family about the importance of democracy.
We must all do our part to save democracy. It is the best way to ensure a better future for ourselves and our children.
