Formation and Early Years
The Lillys were formed by singer-songwriter Kurt Heasley and guitarist Gerard Smith. Heasley had previously been a member of the Boston hardcore band The Freeze, while Smith had played in several local bands, including The Dresden Dolls and The Shadowy Men on a Shadowy Planet. The two musicians met in 1985 and began writing songs together. They were soon joined by bassist Mike Gent and drummer Derek James, and the band began playing live shows around Boston.
The Lillys' early sound was influenced by a wide range of artists, including The Byrds, The Velvet Underground, and The Smiths. The band's music was also notable for its use of jangly guitars and melodic pop sensibilities. Heasley's lyrics were often introspective and dealt with themes of love, loss, and redemption.
Commercial Success
The Lillys released their debut album, "In the Palm of Your Hand," in 1987. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to establish the band as one of the leading lights of the alternative rock scene. The Lillys followed up with a second album, "Daisy," in 1989. The album was even more successful than its predecessor, and it helped to solidify the band's status as one of the most popular alternative rock bands of the 1980s.
The Lillys continued to release successful albums throughout the early 1990s. Their third album, "The Three Way," was released in 1991. The album contained the hit single "Big Top," which helped to propel the band to even greater success. The Lillys' fourth and final album, "The Last Laugh," was released in 1992. The album was a critical and commercial success, and it helped to cement the band's legacy as one of the most important alternative rock bands of the 1980s and 1990s.
Breakup and Legacy
The Lillys disbanded in 1992. Heasley went on to pursue a solo career, while Smith and Gent formed the band The Juliana Hatfield Three. James continued to play drums in various bands, including The Lemonheads and The Scud Mountain Boys.
The Lillys' music has been praised by critics for its originality and emotional depth. The band's songs have been covered by a wide range of artists, including The Bangles, The Replacements, and The Lemonheads. The Lillys have been cited as an influence by a number of contemporary alternative rock bands, including Wilco, The National, and Interpol.
The Lillys' story is a tragic one, but it is also a story of love, loss, and redemption. The band's music continues to inspire and move listeners today, and it is a testament to the power of rock and roll.
