Early Life and Education

George Washington was born on February 22, 1732, at Pope's Creek Plantation in Westmoreland County, Virginia. He was the eldest of six children born to Augustine and Mary Ball Washington. His father was a wealthy planter and his mother was a devout Christian. Washington received a basic education at home from a tutor, and he later attended the College of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He left college after two years to pursue a career in surveying.

Military Career

In 1753, Washington was appointed as a lieutenant colonel in the Virginia Regiment of the Virginia Militia. He fought in the French and Indian War (1754-1763),and he quickly rose through the ranks. In 1758, he was promoted to brigadier general and given command of the Virginia Regiment. Washington resigned his commission in 1759 and returned to Mount Vernon, his plantation home on the Potomac River.

Political Career

In 1774, Washington was elected to the First Continental Congress, which was held in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He served in the Congress until 1775, when he was appointed as commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. Washington led the Continental Army to victory in the American Revolution (1775-1783),and he was unanimously elected as the first president of the United States in 1789.

Presidency

Washington served as president for two terms, from 1789 to 1797. During his presidency, he established the federal government, signed the Bill of Rights into law, and helped to create a strong national economy. Washington is considered to be one of the greatest presidents in American history, and he is often referred to as the "Father of His Country.

Retirement and Death

After retiring from the presidency, Washington returned to Mount Vernon. He spent his remaining years farming and managing his estate. George Washington died on December 14, 1799, at the age of 67. He was buried at Mount Vernon.

Legacy

George Washington is remembered as one of the most important figures in American history. He was a military leader, statesman, and Founding Father who played a key role in the American Revolution and the establishment of the United States. Washington is considered to be one of the greatest presidents in American history, and he is often referred to as the "Father of His Country.
