Thomas Jefferson was born on April 13, 1743, at Shadwell, his family's plantation in Albemarle County, Virginia. He was the third of ten children born to Peter Jefferson, a successful planter and surveyor, and Jane Randolph Jefferson, a member of one of Virginia's most prominent families.

Jefferson's early education was informal, but he showed a great aptitude for learning. He began reading at the age of three and by the age of nine had mastered Latin, Greek, and French. He also studied mathematics, science, and history.

In 1760, Jefferson entered the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia. He excelled in his studies and graduated with honors in 1762. After graduating from college, Jefferson studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1767.

Jefferson's political career began in 1769 when he was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses. He quickly became a leader in the House and was a vocal critic of British colonial policy.

In 1775, Jefferson was elected to the Continental Congress. He played a major role in the drafting of the Declaration of Independence, which was adopted by the Continental Congress on July 4, 1776.

After the Declaration of Independence was adopted, Jefferson returned to Virginia and served as governor from 1779 to 1781. During his governorship, Jefferson oversaw the state's war effort and helped to establish the University of Virginia.

In 1785, Jefferson was appointed minister to France by President George Washington. He served in this position until 1789, when he returned to the United States to serve as Washington's Secretary of State.

Jefferson served as Secretary of State until 1793, when he resigned to run for president. He was elected president in 1800 and served two terms.

During his presidency, Jefferson oversaw the Louisiana Purchase, which doubled the size of the United States. He also sent the Lewis and Clark Expedition to explore the Louisiana Purchase.

Jefferson retired from public life in 1809 and returned to Monticello, his plantation in Virginia. He spent the rest of his life writing, farming, and designing buildings.

Jefferson died on July 4, 1826, the fiftieth anniversary of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence. He is considered one of the most influential figures in American history.
