In 1966, Douglas joined the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee (SNCC),a prominent civil rights organization actively involved in the fight against racial injustice. He recognized the intersectionality of the LGBTQ+ rights movement with the Black Civil Rights Movement and believed that equality for all marginalized groups must be pursued simultaneously.

The Black Panther Party and Stonewall Uprising

During the 1960s, Douglas actively supported the Black Panther Party, an organization working to protect and empower the Black community amidst rampant police brutality and oppression. He saw the Black Panthers' emphasis on self-defense and community care as crucial to achieving social justice.

Douglas played a pivotal role in the Stonewall Uprising of 1969, a watershed moment in the LGBTQ+ rights movement. He was present at the Stonewall Inn during the police raid that sparked the riots and provided support and guidance to the activists who fought back against police brutality.

Founding of the Gay Liberation Front

In the aftermath of Stonewall, Douglas co-founded the Gay Liberation Front (GLF),a militant LGBTQ+ rights organization that employed disruptive tactics to challenge societal norms and demand visibility and equality. As a member of GLF, he organized protests, consciousness-raising groups, and a weekly meeting at the Stonewall Inn that became a hub for LGBTQ+ activists.

National Coming Out Day

Douglas is widely credited with initiating National Coming Out Day in 1988 as a way to encourage LGBTQ+ people to embrace their identities openly and publicly. He believed that visibility and representation were essential to breaking down stigma and fostering acceptance.

LGBTQ+ Archives Project

Recognizing the importance of preserving and documenting LGBTQ+ history, Douglas founded the LGBTQ+ Archives Project in 1992. Through this project, he collected and preserved thousands of materials related to LGBTQ+ culture, activism, and identity. This collection became a valuable resource for researchers, historians, and LGBTQ+ individuals seeking to connect with their past.
